For this week's dose of optimism, I present to you featured artists, The Jaik Miller Band (JMB) with "Your Own Light." If you haven't noticed yet, we're optimists here at TheDreamContinued, and we LOVE positive, powerful lyrics and music that gets you moving.
JMB's song opens with a reference to a dream, saying, "I can dream without even trying." I think we all dream without even trying -- at least at some point in our lives. I doubt Dr. King had to "try" to dream his dream of equality. It just was. The hard part is not the dream, it is (as Dr. King knew) everything that follows -- from mustering up the courage to take the first step to finding confidence and inspiration when your dream seems to be going nowhere (or worse).
But a wonderful thing that JMB's song reminds us is that we are our own light. We have our own information, our own truth, our own inspiration. Like last week's song, I have used the chorus of "Your Own Light" something like a mantra:
You are your own light...
You are your own light...
And I wish you a long and happy life...
You are your own light.
In the second stanza, Jaik sings of love and loss but then reaffirms that he can "fall in love without even trying." Dream without trying. Love without trying. What else can we do without even trying? What else are we making more difficult than we need to?
Now, I'm not saying that things aren't worth working hard for. But, I have to say that I've noticed in my own life that sometimes when I'm trying really, really hard... things often don't flow as well as when I let go a little -- especially when I remember that I am, indeed, my own light. How amazing would this world be if we each allowed our own lights to shine?
I know that there are lots of things that I cannot change... BIG things that may not even change in my lifetime. But, I like the thought that by letting my own light shine, I am making the world a little better. And, if I can show another person how to let his or her own light shine, then I am doing that individual (and all of us) a great service.
